Ciencia convergente
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) identified “convergence research” in 2016 as one of their “10 Big Ideas”. The NSF defines convergence research as a means of solving vexing research problems, focused on societal needs. Convergence research integrates knowledge, methods, and expertise from different disciplines to form novel frameworks and catalyze scientific discovery and innovation. Many persistent and emerging environmental challenges require expertise from engineering, physical sciences, economics, social and behavior sciences, law, medicine, and stakeholder engagement. Each field brings unique expertise, tools, and insights; none of them can successfully address these complex research problems independently. (1) Link
Types of the Convergence Approach of DRR
- Disciplinary approach: Scientists working purely inside their own discipline dealing with disaster (not desirable)
- Multidisciplinary Approach: Scientists from different disciplines working on common disaster issues but working independently (not desirable)
- Transdisciplinary research: Scientists from different disciplines work together to contribute (desirable)
- Collaborative Research: Co-creation of knowledge by a wide range of researchers and stakeholders (desirable)
